Team Selections

23rd July: Spanish o-team selected

MEN: MEN: Roger Casal Fernández (l,m,s,r), Fernando Soriano Rubio (m,s), Lluis Ferrer Ferrer (l,s,r), Javier Gómez Prada (l,m,r). WOMEN: Esher Gil Brotons (l,m,s,r), Annable Fernández Valledor(l,m,s,r), Eva Gil Sánchez(m,s), Alba Baena Albert(l,r). 

Is the first WOC for Fernando Soriano Rubio and Alba Baena, but Fernando has represent our country as a national team member in the World Cup 2005 event in Italy. Alba Baena has dressed up with the Spanish colours in the EOC 2006. Eva Gil Sánchez is only 21 years old and is her first international competition as a senior member, she has competed several times at JWOC.

21st July: Finnish team for WOC

Following the test races at the weekend, Finland is one of the last nations to select its team for WOC. The team is:
Women: Anni-Maija Fincke (s, m), Paula Haapakoski (s, r), Bodil Holmström (l), Heli Jukola (m, l, r), Minna Kauppi (s, m, r) and Maria Rantala (l).
Men: Mårten Boström (s), Mats Haldin (l, r), Antti Harju (l), Jarkko Huovila (m, r), Pasi Ikonen (s, m), Jani Lakanen (l, r) and Jonne Lakanen (s, m).

19th July: Danish team selected

The home-country team for WOC is made up of 5 women and 7 men. Anne Konring Olesen leads the women's team and will compete in all 3 individual formats and in the relay. In the men's team, the 3 relay runners will be selected later from René Rokkjær, Claus Bloch, Carsten Jørgensen and Mikkel Lund. Chris Terkelsen is ineligible as he has previously mapped the competition area.

The team is:
Women: Helene Hausner (l, r), Karina Boen Knudsen (s), Ane Linde (s, m), Anne Konring Olesen (s, m, l, r) and Signe Søes (m, l, r).
Men (individual formats shown only): Claus Bloch (s), Carsten Jørgensen (m or l), Mikkel Lund (s), Christian Nielsen (s, m), René Rokkjær (l), Rasmus Søes (m or l) and Chris Terkelsen (m, l).

14th July: French Format Decisions

France has now decided which individual formats the selected team members will run; they are as follows:

Women: Céline Dodin (s, m, l), Juliette Soulard (m, l), Capucine Vercellotti (m, l).
Men: Philippe Adamski (s, m), Nicolas Girsch (s), François Gonon (m, l), Thierry Gueorgiou (m, l), Thibaut Magne (l), Damien Renard (s, m).

The composition of the men's relay team will be decided later.

14th July: Swiss team named - Simone Niggli to run all formats

Simone Niggli, who has won all the individual WOC titles and been in the winning relay team in both Switzerland in 2003 and in Japan last year, will again compete in all 3 individual formats as well as the relay at WOC 2006.

The team to represent Switzerland at WOC will be: Women: Martina Fritschy (l, r), Sara Gemperle (s, m), Brigitte Grüniger (s), Vroni König-Salmi (m, l, r), Lea Müller (s, m), Simone Niggli (s, m, l, r) and Seline Stalder (l). Men: Fabian Hertner (s), Daniel Hubmann (s, m, r), Marc Lauenstein (l, r), Matthias Merz (m, r), Matthias Müller (s, m), Christian Ott (l) and David Schneider (l).

3rd July: Czech WOC-team 2006

The Czech team for WOC has been announced:
Women: Dana Brozkova, Radka Brozkova, Eva Jurenikova, Zuzana Macuchova, Zdenka Stara
Men: Tomas Dlabaja, Petr Losman, Vladimir Lucan, Michal Smola, Jan Sedivy

3rd July: + 1 for Sweden

Norway may have announced their team first, but Sweden tops them off by selecting one runner more. Only the individual distances for the men have so far been decided by national coach Göran Andersson. With the participation of the defending World Champion in sprint, Emil Wingstedt, Sweden has an extra spot in the men’s sprint qualification. The fourteen runners in the team are:

Men: David Andersson (S, M), Martin Johansson (S), Niclas Jonasson (L), Mattias Karlsson (L), Tobias Noborn (L), Jonas Pilblad (S, M), Emil Wingstedt (S, M)

Women: Lena Eliasson, Emma Engstrand, Karolina A Höjsgaard, Helena Jansson, Jenny Johansson, Anna Mårsell, Kajsa Nilsson

Jonas Pilblad, Martin Johansson, Lena Eliasson, Kajsa Nilsson and Helena Jansson are all WOC debutants. Helena, age 21, is the youngest Swedish WOC runner in the last 15 years

3rd July: Thirteen selected for Norway

Norway is the first of the Scandinavian nations to announce its team for WOC. The thirteen runners in the team will come to Denmark for final training for 5 days from 13th July.

The particular races for which individual members of the team are chosen are indicated (s = sprint, m = middle, l = long distance). Norway’s relay teams will be selected from the 4 indicated on 3rd August.

Men: Holger Hott Johansen (l, m), Øystein Kristiansen (r), Anders Nordberg (l, m), Hans Gunnar Omdal (l, r), Lars Skjeset (s, r), Audu H. Weltzien (s, m) and Øystein Kvaal Østerbø (s, r).

28th June: French Selections

Multi world champion Thierry Gueorgiou heads the French team for WOC 2006. Following selection races last weekend, France has selected as follows:

Men: Philippe Adamski, Nicolas Girsch, François Gonon, Thierry Gueorgiou, Thibaut Magne, Damien Renard.

27th June: Great Britain team selected

The following have been selected for the Great Britain team following selection races held in Aarhus and Silkeborg last weekend:

Women: Helen Bridle (S,M,R), Rachael Elder (M,L), Alison O’Neil (L,R), Sarah Rollins (S,M,R), Jenny Whitehead (L), Pippa Whitehouse (S).
Men: David Brickhill-Jones (S), Matt Crane (M), Jon Duncan (M,L,R), Graham Gristwood (S), Oli Johnson (L,R), Matthew Speake (S), Jamie Stevenson (M,L,R).

WOC debutants in the GBR team are Rachael Elder, Pippa Whitehouse and David Brickhill-Jones. David’s selection is dependent on him proving his fitness in the period up to WOC.

23rd June:USA team selected

Allston heads Australian line-up

Hanny Allston alerted everyone with her 6th place in the long distance final in Japan last year, and she has already thoroughly sussed out the Danish terrain in her preparations for this year’s WOC. Very much on the way up, she could well be in line for a medal this time. There’s plenty of experience in this strong-looking Aussie team.

Schmalfeld and Horst running into form for Germany

Karin Schmalfeld, who finished only seconds behind Simone Niggli to get a silver medal in the World Games last year, and Ingo Horst, best German male orienteer last year, both won in the German middle distance championships last weekend and will be looking to lead a strong German challenge at WOC.

Six in team from Ireland

The Irish team for WOC is:
Women: Ailbhe Creedon, Niamh O’Boyle
Men: Neil Dobbs, Stewart Caithness, Ivan Millar, Andrew Quinn.

New Zealand blend of youth and experience

Tania Robinson’s 16th place at middle distance was New Zealand’s best result in Japan, and Tania will be out to improve on that in Denmark. Jenni Adams and Rob Jessop are also experienced WOC campaigners in their team of 7, coached by NZ legend Alistair Landels.

22nd June:Israel Team News

The Israeli team was selected in the middle of May:

Israel's main goal this year is to get a runner in one of the finals for the first time ever.

12th June: Hungary is amongst the first nations to select their full WOC team.

It is:
Women: Bernadett Kelemen, Eva Makrai, Agnes Simon and Ildiko Szerencsi;
Men: Zoltan Denes, Csaba Gösswein, Gabor Jozsa, Adam Kovacs, Ferenc Levai and Peter Vonyo.

Great Britain has pre-selected Sarah Rollins and Jamie Stevenson.

The remaining members of the GBR team will be selected after races in Aarhus and Silkeborg on the weekend 23-25 June. Several nations will be using the selection races being staged by the WOC organisers on 15-17 July on terrain similar to that to be used for WOC.
